super special guest appearance!

Last week we had the incredible honor of playing one of my songs in the middle of Open Mike Eagle‘s set while he opened for Kimya Dawson at The Smell in LA!

These two musicians are some of my all-time favorites. In my opinion, they are basically the rulers of the underground folk and hip-hop scenes, respectively. I have been friends with Mike Eagle for years now, around the time I first started actively booking myself shows. I was often told, especially around the time I met Mike, that my music sounds like “that girl from Juno.” The girl from Juno is Kimya Dawson because her solo music and her music with The Moldy Peaches make up a majority of the Juno soundtrack. So this show kind of brought me full circle.

During my senior year of high school and freshmen year of college circa 2009/2010, I became obsessed with everything LA underground hip-hop (Swimteam, Project Blowed). One of the main dudes of that scene, VerBS, played a super random show at UC Davis where I went to school. I basically ran up to him after the show and gave him a big hug and we have been buds ever since. I started playing some shows with him, trading-off between Long Beach at my sister’s bookstore and Leimert Park at the KAOS network where he puts on a monthly shindig called BANANAS.

I met Mike at our first Bananas gig and we became friends too! I had him and Kyle (VerBS) play a show for this residency we did at a literally underground venue in downtown Long Beach called Blue Cafe the summer of 2011. We played some random gigs between LA and LB over the years, but mostly I was in school and Mike was honing his craft and spreading his music around the country.

He has been making a super duper, rad name for himself and he makes some my favorite music that exists in the world at the moment. It is an honor to be his homie and I was beyond stoked to be able to share the stage with him again :) I sincerely encourage you to check out all his projects and podcasts and shows!

also, Kimya Dawson is currently on tour and she is amazing! Go support her and listen to her great songs!!!

xo!
